Q Instructions Step 1: Pick up a copy of a magazine aimed strictly at Women. (There are some available in Ablah Library if you'd like to avoid the expense. I do not recommend using an online version unless you can get the entire copy). Step 2: Read it as if you are an alien to our planet or an anthroplogist in the future trying to decipher the culture/worldview of the people you are studying. Step 3: Consider the images. • What types of women are shown? Feel free to run a quick quantitative analysis (Count specific important characteristics. Some examples: how many Asian-American women? How many short women? How many times do you see the entirety of her body? How often does it focus only on specific body types, or body parts?) Step 4: Consider the Language. • Pay close attention to the cover and then consider the articles. What are women supposed to be focusing on? What do they deem important or significant to their lives? What are they being told to value? Step 5: If this were a Bible or a Guide book, could you mimic the lifestyle presented? Would you want to? Now, write up your 1-2 page typed response. Integrate and Support your findings with class readings, activities, discussions. How does this activity, in your opinion, support or detract from what you've already learned? What does this say about the Image of Women in our Society?
