Week Three Cultural Symbol Folder Discussion

Week Three Cultural Symbol Folder Discussion

Q This week's assignment is to find a cultural or co-cultural item and post an image in the Cultural Symbol Folder. You are welcome to post a digital photo, a jpg or gif image from the Internet or whatever image you are able to post. In face-to-face classes, I have had students bring religious icons, i.e., crosses, etc., flags, Native American symbols, Club insignias, etc. Be creative and state in text with your image what it means to you and how it represents a culture. Respond to at least one other student's symbol. There are two examples in the week three discussion folder for you to view before posting your symbol. JOURNAL ACTIVITY Write a one page story about a norm or norms in your culture. Please write the story in reflective narrative fashion recalling what occurred, when it occurred, where it occurred, who was involved, what you experienced and what you learned about yourself and/or others. I will assign full points for any story that is a recollection of your personal experience practicing or experiencing a norm(s). I will be looking for a one page story that does not exceed two pages. I will only be grading the story objectively, based on relevance, not subjectively, since it is your story.

Every culture has unique signs and symbols. Sometimes what a symbol might mean to one culture might stand for something different in another culture. The cultural symbol that I have chosen is the dreamcatcher made of feathers. It is very close and meaningful to me as it is a Native American cultural symbol. It was gifted to my grandmother by her grandmother and has been passed onto my mother. A dream catcher is mainly handcrafted or woven in a willow hoop with netting and attached feathers and beads.
