Week 7 Capstone Portfolio

Week 7 Capstone Portfolio

Q Overview Over the next few weeks, you will prepare a portfolio demonstrating mastery of university goals and outcomes. Your portfolio is an opportunity for you to reflect on your personal educational journey and how it connects with UMGC’s core General Education and University goals. The final portfolio is more than a culminating academic exercise; it is your opportunity to reflect on how your journey has prepared you for future personal and professional growth. Reflecting on prior academic work, you will create a portfolio of your perspectives on UMGC goals and how you have mastered these goals. Prior to beginning your portfolio, it is a good idea to review the CAPL 495 Capstone Portfolio Template and the Capstone Portfolio Project rubric that will be used to score your work. View an example of a portfolio here: CAPL 495 Capstone Portfolio Example. Directions Step 1: Update your existing resume or create a new resume. A draft of your resume is due at the end of Week 3. This activity gives you an opportunity to reflect on your professional and academic achievements. Step 2: In 2-3 paragraphs, write a personal learning narrative that describes your collegiate learning journey, how it shaped you, and describe your professional goals. There is a space for this within the portfolio template. Step 3: Review the 11 UMGC university goals (listed below) and think about what each one means to you. As you do, look for patterns or connections between the goals and academic work (assignments/project) that you completed in the past. You will divide the 11 university goals into groups of 2, 3 or 4. As you consider how to group the goals, you might end up with 3 to 4 groupings. The goals in each group will need to be supported by artifacts (past assignments/projects). The portfolio template provides some structure for organizing this section of the portfolio. University & General Education Goals 1. Mastery: Demonstrate a mastery of the academic and professional content associated with their chosen field of study. 2. Job-Seeking Skills: Develop job-seeking skills in order to take advantage of workplace opportunities and adapt to changing needs of local, national, and international economies. 3. Technology and information literacy: Effectively access and apply technology and information to solve problems. 4. Synthesis: Integrate and apply learning across general and specialized studies. 5. Communication: Communicate effectively in a variety of contexts. 6. Scientific and Quantitative Reasoning: Use quantitative reasoning and scientific principles to analyze data, support conclusions, and solve problems. 7. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Evaluate and solve complex issues or problems. 8. Teamwork: Collaborate toward a common purpose. 9. Diverse Perspectives: Demonstrate a knowledge and application of diverse perspectives in a variety of contexts. 10. Ethics and Civic Awareness: Articulate ethical issues and the values that inform them to be able to act with integrity within academia and in the wider world with appreciation for how decisions made by individuals and groups can have local, national and global impacts. 11. Lifelong Learning: Develop skills and capacity for lifelong learning. Examples Goal Grouping Artifacts & Rationale Submission At the end of week 3 you will submit a draft of your resume. I am an enlisted Soldier in the Army who has been serving for 15 years currently. I am married with two boys. My family is everything to me as I have served 42 months in other countries. I did not get the time to spend with my family so much. So, my family is a huge learning experience for me. I must say that my wife’s patience and support have helped me to resume my studies again. I am still unsure what I would like to pursue after the military. I am optimistic about the future and will start focusing on my next career in two years. I think the military has been my learning journey as meeting new people and serving in new places; I have learned a lot. It has taken me years to continue my educational journey because of my responsibilities.
