Q Project Resource Allocation Introduction: The definition of a project, as we learned at the start of class, is a unique work activity with a specific deliverable. Most projects occur in an organization that is focused on their “normal business” processes and a project is an accessory to achieving their goals. This means that there may be some tough decisions about available resources and how they are to be allocated. For instance, if we want to paint a whole home interior in time for a special event, then we may need to decide whether to move painters off another job, invest in paint spraying equipment, and/ or use a subcontractor. Resources can include time, money, equipment, and work space. When resources are scarce, project planning can be a challenge. Unit Learning Outcome(s) Reflected in assignment: • Prepare a resource requirements plan for a project. (CLO 3, 4 and 5) • Create a network diagram that includes resource limited scheduling. (CLO 3, 4 and 5) Directions: For the project plan you are developing and using the Work breakdown Schedule you developed in week 3, 1. Design a Resource breakdown for labor (people), materials (supplies) and equipment. o The following link may be helpful: http://www.mypmllc.com/project-management-resources/free-project-management-templates/resource-breakdown-structure-template/Links to an external site.. 2. Make a network diagram that illustrates a possible issue with limited scheduling if the resources are not available o Make up an example “what if”- some of the project team all gets the flu at the same time, for instance. 3. Write a short paragraph discussing possible resource issues in your project 4. Place these two elements in a Word file. Due Dates: Submit the Exercise Assignment by 11:59 p.m., Sunday, CT Rubric Unit 6: Exercise Rubric Unit 6: Exercise Rubric Criteria Ratings Pts This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeProject Resource Allocation 20 to >17.0 pts Exceptional The resource allocation breakdown includes a very detailed and accurate list of all labor, materials and equipment. It is based off the Work Breakdown Schedule. The breakdown includes very accurate quantities and helpful notes for major resources. 17 to >13.0 pts Exceeds Expectations The resource allocation breakdown includes a detailed and accurate list of labor, materials and equipment. It is based off the Work Breakdown Schedule. The breakdown includes accurate quantities and good notes for major resources. 13 to >9.0 pts Meets Expectations The resource allocation breakdown includes labor, materials and equipment. It is based off the Work Breakdown Schedule. The breakdown includes quantities and notes for major resources. 9 to >5.0 pts Does Not Meet Expectations The resource allocation breakdown includes general and somewhat accurate lists of labor, materials and equipment. It is based somewhat off the Work Breakdown Schedule. The breakdown includes some quantities and very basic notes for major resources. 5 to >0 pts Unacceptable The resource allocation breakdown does not include detailed lists of labor, materials and equipment. It is not based off the Work Breakdown Schedule. The breakdown does not include quantities and/or notes for major resources. 20 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeWriting and APA 5 pts The exercise has been thoroughly spell checked and proofread with almost no writing/ grammar errors. Assuming that the developer catches flu half-way during the development, it can end up in a serious resource issue. The network diagram is presented in multiple parts. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 It is evident from this network diagram that there are two major processes – development and project deployment (marked in brown in network diagram) that will undergo schedule lapse because of the unavailability of the developer. In this case, the only option is to arrange another developer within the shortest time and also pay extra if demanded by the developer.
