These are probably questions you are wondering and after completing this assignment, you will be able to understand what this movement was and why it is important to learn about and how it connects to our current times. Everyone will be required to create a presentation that addresses the background/historical context sections of the chapters and then you will be assigned a certain set of sources to analyze in your presentation and will complete your presentation with a conclusion slide. Note: The presentation contains 3 parts; in the second part you will select ONE choice from 4 options. 1st Part of Presentation: Historical Context/Background/Setting In 2-4 slides you will need to address the following questions about the historical context, background, and setting sections of Gorn Ch. 6 and Hollitz Ch. 7 1. In Gorn Ch. 6 (historical context section); the author address the reasons why the Second Great Awakening happened. What were these reasons and make sure to include how church leaders felt about the lack of God mentioned in the Constitution and the new establishment clause of the 1st Amendment (p. 103); the need for church reform and low membership among certain groups that had the most power/money (p. 103); and the social/reform movements (temperance and antislavery movements p. 103-104). You should include quotes from the chapter's historical context section and cite the page number in parentheses. In Hollitz Ch. 7 (background/setting section); What does Hollitz argue are the reasons for the Second Great Awakening? Make sure to include discussion about: the rise of Catholics/immigrants, the rise of alcohol consumption, economic systems including the rise of Capitalism, and the political shift and rise of democratic nature. You should include quotes from the chapter's background/setting section and cite the page number in parentheses. 2nd Part of Presentation: You will select from ONE of the choices below and your responses should be 4-6 slides Choice One: Read Sources 2, Source 5 from Gorn Ch. 6 and Source 4 from Hollitz Ch. 7 and address the following Briefly state what Source 2 is about. How sure is Jefferson on the separation of Church and State? Why do you think this is still an issue that is argued today? Look at Source 5 and explain what you see in the picture; interpret this picture, what does it reveal about a revival? What types of people do you see how are they gathered, how are they dressed, what does it show/reveal to you about the Second Great Awakening? Briefly state what Source 4 from Hollitz Ch. 7 is about. What is the main message in regards to equality? What does it reveal about class division and how does it relate to the picture (Source 5 from Gorn Ch. 6). Choice Two: Read Source 6, Source 8 from Gorn Ch. 6 and Source 2 from Hollitz Ch. 7 and address the following Compare and Contrast Source 6 and Source 8. Briefly state what each source is about and how they are the same and/or how they are different. What do these sources reveal about the time period, the people and the power and economic structures of the time. What do they reveal about the Second Great Awakening? Briefly highlight some of the rules as outlined in Source 2 from Hollitz Ch. 7. How would the authors of Source 6 and/or Source 8 (from Gorn Ch. 6) view these rules? Choice Three: Read Source 9 , Source 10, Source 12 from Gorn Ch. 6 and Source 14 from Hollitz Ch. 7 address the following Compare and Contrast Source 9 and Source 10. Briefly state what each source is about and how they are the same and/or how they are different? What do these sources reveal about the need for the temperance movement? What class is the "Jolly Fellow" from ? Look at Source 14 from Hollitz Ch. 7; what does this reveal about the Second Great Awakening and who participated in it? Why are certain professions/classes of people more likely to convert? How would the "Jolly Fellow" fit into this chart; do you think he would be a convert? Finally, look at Source 12 (Gorn Ch. 6) and briefly state what it reveals to you about this time period. How does this source relate to Source 9 "the Jolly Fellow" and Source 14 (from Hollitz Ch. 7) and who the Second Great Awakening appealed to? Choice Four: Read Source 13 and Source 14 from Gorn Ch. 6 and Source 8 and Source 9 from Hollitz Ch. 7 and address the following Read Source 13 and Source 14 from Gorn Ch. 6 and briefly state what they are about. Then, compare and contrast their main ideas. Why did the temperance movement gain widespread support from the religious revivalists but the support was not as widespread with the abolitionist movement? Can you make any similarities between this and our modern times? Look at Source 8 and Source 9 from Hollitz Ch. 7 and briefly state what they are about (or what the picture reveals for Source 8). Why was the Second Great Awakening so appealing to slaves and freedmen in the North? What does this reveal about the Second Great Awakening? 3rd Part of Presentation: You need to include a conclusion slide (or slides) that address the following (1-3 slides) Look at the last paragraph in the Setting section on pgs. 147-148 and state a few of the reasons for the Second Great Awakening that historians have argued. Then, look at the postscript in Gorn Ch. 6 (pg. 120) and the Conclusion in Hollitz Ch. 7 (pg. 170) and decide what you think the real reasons for the Second Great Awakening were.
