The Science of Progress

Q In this discussion, all you need is the Dominance of Science lecture and your own brain- no maps, paintings, or primary documents! I'd like you to really think about the word "Progress" as you answer the following questions: 1) Science has certainly solved many problems over the years. We wouldn't walk for Breast Cancer, for example, if we didn't think that progress was possible. What do you think is the most amazing scientific accomplishment to date and why? 2) Nineteenth Century Positivists believed that science would eventually solve every problem. But, sometimes science brings more questions than answers. Contraversies abound over things like cloning, nuclear weaponry, and even vaccination. What do you think the greatest challenge is for scientists today? Use examples. 3) How would YOU define "Progress"? Do you believe that science can explain everything? (Are you a Positivist?) Why? Respond to two other students. You may be surprised with what you find. I was surprised the first time I asked a class: "How many of you believe in Evolution?" Remember, everyone has the right to their own opinion. You have already impressed me with your grace and respect for each other. Bravo!

Science has developed to a great extent over the past centuries. What seemed impossible at a certain given time due to many constraints and seemed impossible to resolve or achieved has been achieved through major scientific progress and developments. One such accomplishment in the areas of science is Electricity. Without the invention of electricity everything in the world would be dark and we would have to be dependent upon sunlight only during the daytime. At night we would not be able to do anything. Without electrical supply and power many other inventions would have been impossible.
