I think for me the most apt theory describing deviance is Robert Merton’s Strain Theory. The theory accepts that deviance is an integral part of the functioning society but how this deviance plays out, in positive or negative way forms the basis of this theory. All of us have goals that are socially acceptable but all of us do not have an equal footing in the society to pursue these goals in a socially acceptable manner.
