Q Research Paper: In this course, each student is expected to write a research paper addressing either one of the challenges faced by managers of safety programs, or an analysis of a currently existing safety program. Sample topics from the “challenges” area include the following: comparison of safety programs across industries; role of regulations in enforcing safety; economics of safety; role of the insurance industry in advancing safety; and public perception of risk. If an analysis of a particular aerospace safety program will be undertaken instead, the student bears the responsibility for determining early in the course whether they will be able to obtain sufficient information to complete the paper requirements. The paper should conform to the requirements prescribed by the APA style guide (6th Edition). Typically, 15 or more pages (approximately 3750 words) are required to treat a topic in appropriate detail. To assist everyone in moving along on this process, topic submissions are due by 2/3/19, and a detailed outline is due by 3/3/19. Each of these documents should be uploaded to the appropriate folder in the Dropbox function. The final version of the paper is due on 3/31/19. Grades for the research paper will be determined as follows:
Q Topic Submission 10 points Outline 20 points Paper 120 points Total 150 points Presentation: Each student will prepare a Power Point presentation detailing their findings during their research for completion of their research paper. For online students, the presentation should include either voice or speaker notes to clarify the topic beyond what can be accomplished by the slides alone. The presentation should be approximately 15 minutes in length, and should allow the class to become familiar with the topic area which was explored. The presentation is due by 4/7/19, and should be submitted via the Dropbox function. All students will then review the online presentations within D2L.
