Q English Composition II: Guidelines for Process Essay 1 Readings: Choose one reading from each list (total of 2 texts): • List#1: Susan Glaspell, “Trifles” and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “The Yellow Wallpaper” • List#2: Margaret Atwood, “Habitation”; Gregory Corso, “Marriage”; Adrienne Rich, “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers”; T.S. Eliot, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” Essay prompt: For this essay, I am asking you to make an argument about a topic as it is handled in two of the literary works that you have read so far in this course. To write this essay, you should connect the two texts around a specific theme, idea, issue, or argument that is raised in both texts. What is important is that you make an argument about how the texts are connected. Making an argument means going below the surface, so you should not say that both texts deal with the issue of X and/or point out their similarities and differences; instead, show how they are connected. A good question to ask yourself is: what can I only see/understand about the issue (or understand with more insight and complexity) by bringing the two texts into conversation with each other? You need to analyze both texts in your essay, which means finding and analyzing specific quotes from each text. Feel free to use class discussions to help you generate ideas. Essay Requirements: • A minimum of four double-spaced pages Criteria for a successful essay include: • A title that engages reader interest and captures the essence of your essay • A well-developed introduction • A clear thesis statement at the end of the introduction • Well-developed support for your argument (weave in quotes and analyze them) • Logical organization with topic sentences and transitions • A conclusion that does more than summarize your discussion; reflect on the significance of what you’ve accomplished or suggest directions for further conversation • Few or no sentence-level errors (grammar, spelling); proofread your work carefully • Correct citations (MLA 9th ed), both in-text and on the Works Cited page Essay Submission: Submit your working thesis for feedback and your rough draft for peer review by the dates listed on the calendar. You must complete 2 peer reviews of classmate essays to get credit for participation in this important part of the writing process. Respond to the feedback you are given, revise your essay accordingly, and submit the final version in one of the approved file formats by the specified deadline.
