I have chosen chapter twenty three, “The World Machine” from Baigrie for the Primary Document Assignment. The text is about the Earth’s gradation process and how it was described as a world machine by James Hutton. He is known as the first real empiricist in geology (Baigrie, 209). According to the text, the Earth works in a way that prevents aging. It follows a process of three stages in order to prevent aging. The first stage is where the rock strata of Earth break down and decay due to the erosion of rivers, wind, and glaciers and the eroded products are washed into the ocean (Baigrie, 210).
