Q Click on this link (Pop Culture Summary) to submit your one page summary of a pop culture source, here, in a Word document file. • For your summary assignment, choose one of the following primary sources: either one episode of a fictional television, Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon sitcom or drama, or one music video and its lyrics. Choose an current episode or music video / lyrics that deals with some element of diversity in American culture (diverse people / groups / ideas). The primary source you summarize Week Two will be analyzed in an essay Week Three. • Review the Guidelines to Writing a Summary of a Pop Culture Source. Consider how summarizing a primary source that includes audio and video is different from summarizing a text, like a newspaper article. Use the "Guidelines" worksheet to organize your summary (above file). • Write an objective one-page, double spaced, academic summary of the primary pop culture source you choose. • Begin with bibliographic information that identifies your source and includes your source's thesis (main point). Introduce and summarize images / scenes in the order they occur. Introduce and Paraphrase meaningful lyrics / dialogue; direct quotes must be enclosed in quotation marks and cited. Conclude with the episode's or music video's final words / lyrics or scene / image. • Include a current, Ninth Edition, MLA works cited citation for the source you are summarizing at the end of your summary. • A summary must be objective; do not include any opinion or analysis in your summary. Save it for your analysis essay. • Review the Example summaries. What is a primary source and a secondary source? Primary sources can be described as those sources that are closest to the origin of the information. Anything that summarizes, evaluates or interprets primary sources can be a secondary source. If a source gives you an overview of background information or presents another researcher's ideas on your topic, it is probably a secondary source. Caveat: Summaries always begin and end with bibliographic information, so the reader can identify the source being summarized. If the source of your summary is not clearly identified, using MLA documentation, then your assignment is plagiarized. Choose one primary pop culture source that is current (2016 to 2022) and relevant for both unit one writing assigments: summary and analysis essay.
