Through writing people respond to problems and can create change in the world. In this notebook assignment, you will be asked to showcase both a basic and critical understanding of the following text: "Farewell to Baseball Address" (Links to an external site.) As you read Gehrig's speech, annotate it. Once you’re done reading, annotating, and re-reading it, respond to the following set of questions: 1. Who is the author? List one or two important things about him. 2. What is the date of publication? Were there any significant events going on at the time or just transpired before Gehrig delivered his speech? 3. How would you describe the tone (Links to an external site.) of the text? 4. Why was this text written? Do a little research to figure out what was being said about the matter addressed in the speech before and after it was given. 5. How would you describe the persona of the writer? As you respond to this question, put yourself in the author's shoes and consider the Threshold Concepts on [writing] and [action] listed above in blue. 6. What is the one main idea the author wants to leave the reader with by the end of the text? 7. What examples are used to support this main idea? Think beyond a general audience and name one possible community for the speech. Why do you believe the author's words would resonate with this particular audience? 9. Find two or more words that stood out to you in Lou Gehrig's speech and discuss how they contribute to the overall tone. 10. Revisit "Choices: The Choice of Structure". (Links to an external site.) Scroll down to where Kurland presents the last set of primary relationships. Name and explain how at least one of these relationships is being used in Gehrig's speech.
