Module 5. Discussion Erupting Violence

Q At the turn of the twentieth century, conflicts between labor and management shook the expanding industrial sector, sometimes culminating in violence. Incidents such as the strike at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, known as the Uprising, the Ludlow Massacre, and the Haymarket Affair were just a few examples of erupting tension. In your text, locate “Map 16.3 Sites of Industrial Violence in the United States.” To complete your discussion assignment, please do the following: • Choose one incident of industrial violence. What did the parties involved claim were the underlying causes of violence? What happened to the parties involved? Explore the circumstances of that incident in two or three paragraphs.? Be sure to answer the following questions: o Why do you think there was such strong support for the union movement and what challenges did supporters face? How did these violent incidents hurt or help their cause? o What do you think could have prevented the violence? What suggestions would you have given to either party to avoid violence and resolve the situations before violence? • When you are done, post your paragraphs to the discussion forum. Review a post from another student who did not choose the same incident as you. • Compare and contrast that outcome to the outcome of your incident, and discuss any similarities and differences there were. Why are those similarities or differences important in terms of workers’ rights? Did this incident help or hurt the union movement? Do you agree with the suggested resolution?

One incident of industrial violence had been the Great Railroad Strike of the year of 1877 (Montoya et al., 2017). The laborers/workers had claimed that the underlying causes of the violence had been the anger/frustration caused by the decreasing of wages. It had not been the first time but the third time for the wages to be decreased in one specific year (Montoya et al., 2017). If the wages had been decreased once in that year, there could have been prevention of the violence. Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) had claimed that the wages had been decreased in a justifiable manner because of the regularly occurring economic downturns in American during that time (Montoya et al., 2017).
