Let us first understand the premises of Chapter 6 of Candide. “Auto-da-fe” means “act of faith”. Here the act of faith is a public execution which will supposedly stop the occurrence of earth quakes. This decision has been taken by the Lisbon authorities. There are three choices made for the execution. A man who has married his godmother, two men who are Jewish and Pangloss. Pangloss talks too much and so he is selected. At this point Candide is beaten as he has listened to the teachings of Panglosss. Candide is heavily injured and then suddenly an old lady comes and asks him to follow her.
