Four-Step Critique Process Activity

Four-Step Critique Process Activity

Q Instructions Dalí Atomicus (1948) by Philippe Halsman comprises public domain material in the United States. Instructions Please read over the How to Critique Artwork document, which details the four-step critique process. This process will help you look at your own photographs, talk about them, and look and talk about photographs of others. As a photographer, it is important to practice the skill of critiquing. It is important to always think about pictures constructively. Always ask yourself, “Why do I like this photograph?” and “What makes this photograph successful?” Ask the same thing about photographs that you are not fond of. Do not be afraid to express your opinions as long as you have the right language to back it up. Before you begin your response • Look at the above photograph. • First make a mental note of what is going on: What is the subject matter? What choices has the photographer made with regard to the composition? How is it set up? • Note your initial reactions before you begin to think seriously about it. Now begin formulating your response • Describe what you see. This is the easiest part, do not overthink it. Just write down exactly what you see in the photograph. Make sure to be as detailed as possible—you should spend some time looking at the photograph. • Analyze what is in the photograph. Look at the composition, the lighting, the framing, the textures, the way the subjects are captured. For example, how are the shadows in the photograph composed? What subjects are the shadows coming from? • Interpret the photograph. What do you think is happening? What story is being told? • Judge the photograph. This is where your own opinion comes into play. Is this a successful photograph? Do you like it? Why or why not? Please write a brief response of 300–500 words on the photograph above using the four-step critique process. Please write your response as a list with the corresponding numbers one through four matching each step of the process: (1) describe, (2) analyze, (3) interpret, (4) judge. Write it in Microsoft Word. When you have completed the assignment, return to the assignment page. Upload a saved copy of your critique with your first and last name in the file name. In the photograph, there are three cats, two men, water splashing, a chair, a canvass painting, and what appears to be a tripod. The objects in the picture, including one man and the three cats seem to be defying gravity. One of the cats seems to be pouncing towards a man who is also floating in the air, while the other two cats seem to be involved in either a fight or playing with each other. On the left side of the room, the other man appears to be entering the room, although only his hand and knee are visible. Next to him is a chair that is floating and a water splash at the lower corner of the photograph.
