Q 1. Do you think there could be differences based on gender, age, race or ethnic identity?
2. Where were these things made? What does this suggest to you about globalization?
Yes, I think there could be difference based on gender, age, race of ethnic identity. The needs and wants of men and women would be different. Young people will stress more on the ‘want’ factor while the more we grow up, we focus to fulfilling the ‘needs’ of us and our family. It is not that the old does not have anything in the ‘want’ column but the ‘needs’ always get the first priority. Family income also decides that on which focus will be more, need or want? Yes, we are influenced by our culture, our acquaintances, the media and they heavily influence our buying decisions. Depending on race and ethnic identity, there can be many food items which people need. The demand surely differs from race to race. Boys will spend more on cars while girls will spend more on cosmetics. That is the way stereotypes are promoted. Now with the ease of ordering online and getting it delivered at home has made us buy things which are not actually essentials. Even I as a person who prefers minimalism end up buying unnecessary stuff at times. The advertisement, the constant flashing of product description on social media pages are all aimed to make up cough up more money for unnecessary goods.
