Q How would you characterize the tone in which the story is told—esp. at the beginning? What is the effect of using this tone for an account of such bizarre incidents?
In the beginning of the story the tone is exceptionally empathetic. The story is written in such a way that the readers are able to connect with the protagonist Gregor on an emotional level. This tone sets the whole mood for the story. The transformation of Gregor is expressed in a sober yet straightforward manner. The situation is grave but the language is extremely ordinary and this gives an idea that the setting of the story if chaotic as well as absurd. The effect of using this tone is in alignment with the absurdist tone of the whole story.
