After reading the Week 5 Lesson Overview, compose a persuasive essay (400-word minimum) that counterargues fallacies such as false claims and stereotypes. The purpose of this assignment is to provide counterarguments for a fallacious opinion. NOTE: Recall this week’s Everything’s an Argument reading about fallacies (see “fallacies” in the Everything’s an Argument index). In this essay assignment, use a minimum of three counterargument examples to argue against one of the fallacious arguments below, and develop those counterarguments in separate paragraphs without using personal attacks or forms of the words false or lie. Do not take a “middle of the road” position in your counterarguments. Take a firm stand. Incidentally, what is wrong with using a personal attack? Personal attacks in an essay or research paper are referred to as ad hominin fallacies, which are also in this week’s Lesson Overview reading assignment. Short version: Instead of a personal attack, argue against the person’s ideas. People are not morons although some of their ideas are moronic. For example, if a writer refers to President Bozo as incompetent, brainless, and has a lack of leadership skills; that writer has committed an ad hominin fallacy even though the writer is correct. Have a good time with this one. Below are the fallacious arguments. To counterargue them, a writer would have to offer specific reasons about why the original arguments are fallacious. Remember, your job as a writer is to counterargue one of the arguments below. Choose one. Fallacious argument 1: The voting age in the United States should be lowered to 16 years of age because today’s 16-year-olds are more responsible and informed than those that age in the past decades. Fallacious argument 2: Noncitizens who violated federal law by illegally crossing into the United States should be allowed to vote in elections if they apologize and have violated no other laws. POINT OF VIEW NOTE: To put the kibosh on any opposition to sharing your personal opinion about the topics, the first-person point of view of one of the two choices below is assigned. If you choose “Fallacious argument 1,” compose the essay in the first-person point of view of a resource officer assigned to a high school (grades 9 through 12) and a middle school (grades 6 through 8). If you choose “Fallacious argument 2,” compose the essay in the first-person point of view of an immigrant who followed all the rules, violated no laws, and eventually became a proud, naturalized American citizen. Choose only one of the above fallacious arguments. No statistics or history is permitted in this essay assignment. QUOTATION REQUIREMENT: As evidence of research to support your thesis (argument, claim, opinion), include two direct quotations from your source (no more than eight lines accumulative), and one full citation on a Works Cited page. Only one source is assigned or permitted. You must provide that source, and the source must list an author (both first and last name) and must be dated (minimum day, month, and year). Copyright years are never acceptable as dates. One source: No other sources shall be used in the essay. For clarity, this assignment requires two direct quotations from the same source. Each quotation must be at least two complete lines of text but not more than four lines of text. Each quotation must be placed in a separate paragraph and must pertain to the content of that paragraph. The accumulative lines of quotations must not exceed eight. IN-TEXT CITATIONS: No matter how many quotations are used in an EH 1302 essay, an in-text citation must be provided with that quotation even when the author’s name is used to introduce that quotation. An example of applying a counterargument strategy would be to counterargue the following opinion written by gun store owner Cindy-Lou Wheeler. Cindy-Lou fully supports our God-given Second Amendment, but here is Cindy-Lou's brief counter argument: I have visited the country of Slobovia many times because it has the best deals on many firearms that I stock in my lower Alabama store, Wiregrass Guns and Pawn. Slobovia also has very lenient gun laws. Slobovia’s Constitution has a Second Amendment similar to America’s; the difference is that Slobovia’s politicians and judges actually know how to read. In fact, any person twelve years or older can open-carry pistols and long guns throughout the country, but a background check and permit must be obtained. Still, I am adamantly opposed to issuing open-carry permits to women in Slobovia. My reason is that Slobovian women are notorious for sneaking their husbands’ guns out of the house, frequently pointing guns at their neighbors after a little spat, and “accidentally” emptying a magazine or two into the side of their neighbor’s outdoor facility or barn. On almost a weekly basis, Slobovian women, especially those who live in southern Slobovia, have also been seen shooting their neighbors’ goats just to wound them. Cindy-Lou Wheeler, Wheeler’s Gun and Pawn, Ltd. Could Cindy-Lou compose an essay that supports the issuance of free lifetime open-carry permits to Slobovian women? Of course she could, especially if she were a politician trying to upgrade her voter base and appease future voters who actually believe what Cindy-Lou says. If for any reason you do not fully agree with your own counterargument even in the assigned first-person point of view, at your discretion, you may use a disclaimer after the concluding paragraph of your essay similar to the disclaimer found by accessing this source. PARAGRAPH REQUIREMENT: The paragraph requirement for Daily Writing essay assignments is introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and concluding paragraph. Paragraph divisions provide transition, clarity, and organization to an essay. A paragraph in EH 1301 and EH 1302 must be attention-getting, but more structured, consisting of a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence.
