Q Purpose: Practice analyzing a play through the lens of Critical Race Theory by examining critical questions. Task: After reading and viewing the Introduction to Critical Race Theory, answer one or two questions related to the theory (see below) to discuss August Wilson's Fences. Be sure to provide evidence (passages from the play) to support your answers. Your response should be one to two paragraphs. Questions Applying Critical Race Theory How does race shape the ways the characters interact with each other (both onstage and in offstage actions we learn about)? What types of symbols, objects, or cultural artifacts reflect the dominant culture's perceptions of race? How does racism function as a persistent force in American society? How do the characters combat racism? How does the play reflect the experiences of victims of racism? Use specific details from the text to support your answer(s), including at least one direct quote. Consider this preparation for your essay in this Unit. Respond to at least 2 other students' posts. Your initial post and peer responses should be substantive. Troy’s first major encounter with racism is his baseball career. Troy: “Got up here and found out . . . not only couldn’t you get a job . . . you couldn’t find no place to live.
