Q OBJECTIVES • Implement strategies that will aid one in becoming an effective reader of technical documents (CLO 1) • Examine audiences and develop strategies for addressing them (CLO 2) • Effectively compose written ideas in standard, grammatically-correct, formal English, with no lapses in usage, mechanics, and spelling (CLO 4) • Utilize and document library and information resources (CLO 6) ASSIGNMENT Students will select or create a problem in the work environment to focus on for a 2-part informational report. These "problems" are, of course, hypothetical, but they should be realistic and well-thought-out. You'll need to create any and all necessary details to effectively complete all parts of the project. Part 1—Incident Report: • Assignment: Students will construct an incident report—minimum 1 page in length—about an accident or near-miss, a health/safety emergency, or an equipment problem. • Outline: o Narrative (1 par.): Recreates the context of the incident; must be clear, focused, and thorough but also concise. o Cause(s) (1-2 par.): Identifies a single cause or multiple causes, but either approach should thoroughly explain how the cause(s) led to the incident. In other words, more is not necessarily better. However, do not skip causes to get out of doing more work. Any gaps in logic will lose points. o Concerns (at least 2 par.): Identify at least two issues that were raised because of the incident. These may be presented as a list, though the section should include an introductory sentence. Explanations should use complete sentences. o Recommendations (1 par.): Address the future “investigation” of the incident and ways to prevent it, so this section should include where one might need to start looking to find meaningful research on the issue. • Additional Criteria: o This document will be formatted using appropriate headings (level and style) and will demonstrate an awareness of page design. o Tone should focus on conveying ideas objectively despite being a high pressure situation. o Source Restrictions: No outside sources are permitted for this assignment. Part 2—Directive: • Assignment: Students will construct a directive—roughly 1 page in length—to fellow employees that explains changes to be implemented to prevent the incident from recurring. • Outline: o Summary (1 par.): Explain what problem is being addressed o New Policy: State the new policy clearly, concisely, and explicitly; include potential penalties for breaking the new policy. o New Procedure to be Implemented: Prepare a clear set of instructions to be followed by employees to prevent the incident from recurring. o Contact Information: Provide contact information for those who have further questions. • Additional Criteria: o This document will be formatted to demonstrate an awareness of page design. o Tone should focus solely on being assertive but approachable. o Source Restrictions: No outside sources are permitted for this assignment. WRITING GUIDELINES • Students will upload one document clearly separated into the two required sections to Canvas by the deadline, and they must be uploaded as a .doc or .docx file. • Each part should adhere to the length requirements noted above. • Any information presented as a bulleted/numbered list should be that way purposefully—effectively and efficiently—and should be in a form that is consistent (complete sentences, actions, items). • Reports should be thoroughly proofread for errors in grammar and mechanics.
