Calligraphy plays a large part in Islamic culture. Arabic calligraphy was first created to increase the unification factor of the Qur’an. Since the Qur’an is in one language (Arabic), Arabic can become a unifying language for Muslims worldwide. The evolution of Arabic script was a long and highly complex process, but eventually one of the most widely-used variations, Kufic, was developed. By the late eighth century, Kufic became the main language of copying the Qur’an, a big deal, since the Qur’an’s main requirement is to remain in Arabic.
