In the story "The Fourth of July," Lorde writes to express her displeasure over racial discrimination of black people in America. The writer takes us back to her younger days when she visited Washington for the first time. Lorde and her sister Phyllis had a trip to Washington organized by their school, but they could not be taken together with the white children since hotels in Washington could not accommodate black children. So, their parents had resulted in taking them on a trip to Washington by themselves.
