Perhaps you were a girl who wanted to play sports or a boy who wanted to try drama or dance or even just play with dolls, but we weren't permitted to because of gender roles. Maybe you really wanted to go trick-or-treating with friends, but your family religion didn't approve of Halloween. Perhaps you really wanted to paint and draw, but you weren't allowed to get messy due to family rules (laundry is expensive [socio-economic], girls shouldn't get messy [gender], etc.). For most students, the easiest way to do this is to either cut and paste the questions into a text entry or print the form and upload a screenshot from their phone. Step 2: Initial Response Due Thursday by 11:59 pm If we were in an on-ground class, I would bring multiple activities to the classroom (such as paint, markers, puzzles, blocks, dollhouses, etc.) and have you play for an hour. Since we're online, I'm instead going to you pick one of the following activities and spend at least an hour doing them. It's important to spend at least an hour, since it may take that long for you to let go and really enjoy the play! • Option One: Go to a local park and spend an hour playing on the equipment. • Option Two: Go online and spend an hour playing free children's puzzle games or video games. Answer the following questions: 1. Which activity/activities did you choose? Why? 2. How did you feel while you were playing? 3. How do you feel your cultural identity influenced your play? (Do not say "it didn't" as this isn't possible! Our cultural identity influences everything we do!) Consider: Gender, language, SES (socio-economic status), family structure, etc. Step 3: Response to Classmates Due Sunday by 11:59 pm You must post your initial response before you will be able to view a classmate's posts. Respond to at least 2 classmates' original posts. Your responses should approximately at least 1-2 full paragraphs in length (but must be at least 1 for full credit) and must include the following... • What are your thoughts or feelings about the information shared by your classmate? • Extend the discussion by providing some item of new information to the conversation. This might be accomplished by 1) asking a clarifying or thought-provoking question, 2) sharing an additional, relevant personal experience, or 3) sharing new information from the textbook or a link to an outside resource that supports the conversation. Be sure to check back in on the discussion regularly to respond to any questions you and to read the responses to any questions you have asked.
