Q Gladwell has several theories about what can help lead to success. Make an argument about what you think leads to success. Write a well-organized, well-developed essay. Use two outside sources: You must use Gladwell for support. You also need to use one other reliable source. We will discuss what "reliable means" in class. We have not finished the book yet, so I know that you can't possibly talk about the whole book. Criteria: I will cover all of the points below. It' s okay if you don't know what I am talking about when you see this list. By the time the final draft is due, you will understand each of these points. You must turn in one draft. Otherwise, I may choose not to accept your final draft. This is because learning "how to write" (the process of writing) is as important as learning "what to write" (the essay itself). 1,250-1,500 words (5-6 pages typed, double space). Not longer than 1,750 words! Clear, arguable thesis statement & TEA paragraphs Things to include in your introduction: Introductory hook (no questions as hooks!) Short intro of the full author name & book title Thesis Conclusion: Restatement of thesis (one or two sentences only) Well-thought-out ideas--not a summary of the points from the essay Each paragraph must have support from Outliers and/or one other outside source; use MLA in-text citations (We will cover how to do this.) Work Cited at the end of the essay (We will cover how to do this.) Style. We will cover the grammar topics below before your essay is due. The essay should not include: any passive voice, announcement language “In this essay, I will talk about . . .,” over generalizations including: “you”/"we all"/"all people" Proofread especially for run-on sentences, comma splices, use of FANBOYS, capitalization of “I” and spelling.
