Collaborative Activity #4 Contextual Factors of Media Violence

Violence

Q In class this week, we discussed contextual factors that characterize media violence. This collaborative activity asks you to find a movie or TV show scene that illustrates these factors. By Friday, post both an initial response. In your initial post, find online a 3-5 minute clip from a movie or TV show that contains violent content. (See criteria below for what kind of scenes you can/can't use.) 1. Identify the name of the movie or TV show in your subject line. 2. In the body of your post, give the clip's URL and a brief description of the movie/TV show and scene (e.g., what is the movie's/show's rating, what happens in this scene, who are the characters). **If your movie contains very graphic violence, explicit sexual content, or extensive profanity, please provide a warning to potential viewers. 3. Then rate the scene as "High," "Medium," or "Low" for each of the following contextual factors. Provide an explanation AND specific examples so your peers understand why you assigned that rating. Refer to the definitions provided in class lecture to make a strong argument for each of these contextual factors. • Glamorization • Sanitization • Trivialization • Justification Criteria for picking scenes/movies: • You may choose a clip from any movie or TV show that was in popular release in mainstream movie theaters or aired on primetime cable or network TV in the past 15 years. • Please do NOT pick a clip from a horror film or clips rated "M" for Mature. I don't want to traumatize anyone. • I prefer clips from popular, mainstream movies and TV shows, ranging in ratings from PG to R. Action movies are always a good choice. Animated movies are fine too. Network or cable TV shows are fine. • Please do NOT use a movie that I used in my class lecture. You will not get credit for these examples. If your clip contains graphic sexual or violent content, please write a large, attention-grabbing warning that describes the content so that students are not required to view content that would be offensive or disturbing to them. By Sunday, post a reply to peers. In your reply to peers, provide constructive criticism, correct any errors you see, and push the conversation further.

I chose a clip from the movie Home Alone (1990) via the url https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOrsgyCTbKk. This movie is about a child of 8 years old who is left alone in a house accidentally by his parents. The child ensures that no individual can enter the house at night to cause harm to him/ the house. Therefore, he uses a gun and has the courage to protect himself alone. This movie’s rating is PG. In this scene chosen by me, there are two con men who try to ensure that they enter the child’s house and rob.
