Trolley Situation

Trolley Situation

Q The trolley situation is an exciting opportunity to open a window and lay a foundation. For you personally, exactly where is the line drawn? Here's the basic situation (video). Video 1: (Very brief) The Trolley Problem (Links to an external site.) Video 2: ( A little more in depth) Would you sacrifice one person to save five? - Eleanor Nelsen (Links to an external site.) Below are two related short videos from the TV show "The Good Place" that will help increase your understanding (warning: there is a little blood in them): 1-Good Place Trolley Problem (Links to an external site.) 2-The Good Place - The Trolley Problem (Links to an external site.) So, now that you've had a chance to watch the videos, think carefully for a moment on where that line should be drawn? You see, as a manager you're going to be faced with a variety of situations and at times making the decision can be difficult! On top of being challenged at times in making the decision, as the manager you are privy to information that is not apparent or available to others at your place of employment. That means in other people's eyes, the decision you made may not have been the best! But, your hands are tied in your ability to share information. Of course, this ties into your staff understanding the process, having faith in your ability, and knowing you would not do something to hurt them. Anyways, back to the trolley… I would like you to answer the following questions and confine your answers to one page only (single spaced)! 1- What were the first thoughts that went through your mind as the videos were being presented? 2- if you are the person standing at that switch, and there were five individuals in the trolley and one individual on the sidetrack, what would you do if you could save those five by sacrificing the one? What if the one was a child, your friend, your spouse, your parent, your own child? Where would you draw the line? I'm sitting on the edge of my chair, excited about the opportunity to read your thoughts on this situation!

Saving all the workers had been the first thought that went through my mind as the videos were being presented. This is because I was thinking about any way in which I could save each of the six workers. In case of considering the heavy man to be thrown from the top of the bridge to the railway track to stop the trolley, I had been thinking about throwing a large stone or some other heavy object possessed by me or the heavy man. I was thinking about never being in such an ethical dilemma where I would have to take away or sacrifice the life of even a single individual. This is because the eventual result would inevitably be the death of an innocent human being. I was also thinking about moving the trolley to a direction in which the trolley would move out of the railway track and all the six workers would be saved eventually. However, this move would risk the lives of the individuals traveling in the trolley. Therefore, there could be more damage caused to life and property if I would make such a move. There could be more lives of more individuals lost if I would make the move of moving the trolley from the railway track. There could be lives of some workers also lost in the process of moving the trolley out of the railway track. This is because the trolley could
