These owls use their larger size and superior hunting skills to cause problems for the protected “spotted owl,” a species of owl that was placed on the list for protection under the ESA in 1990. Since that time, the population of spotted owls has dropped forty percent due to the barred owls. Because of this, the Obama Administration announced a new plan that would allow government workers to shoot selected barred owls so that their spotted cousins might thrive.
