Thermodynamics Lab Discussion

Q This assignment supports the following Unit Objectives: • (U82) Explain the factors that affect specific heat (CLO4) • (UDS) Develop a well thought out and correct response to various discussion questions (CLO2)(CLO4)(Goal 4) Do not start a new thread. Simply reply to my posting. Be sure to comment on at least two of your classmates' postings. Your replies must be more than a simple phrase like "I agree" or "I like your answers". Replies should reflect on why you agree or like what has been posted. Your replies must reflect a genuine effort to engage your fellow classmates regarding the comments provided or the problem that has been solved. Please post your responses here. 1. What is the difference between heat capacity and specific heat? 2. Water has a high specific heat. What effect does that have on coastal climates? 3. When heating water on the stove, what factors determine how long it will take to boil? 4. As a child, your parents may have yelled at you in summer to close the door because "you're letting the cold out." Use thermodynamics to explain why that statement as written is incorrect.

1. Heat capacity is an extensive property, but specific heat is an intensive property. An intensive property does not depend on the amount of matter present (mass, volume, etc), but an extensive property does. 2. The high heat capacity of water also explains why the temperatures of land near a body of water are more moderate. The high heat capacity of water keeps its temperature within a relatively narrow range, causing nearby coastal areas to also have a narrow daily and seasonal temperature range.
