Studying Deviance Sociologically A Reflection

Studying Deviance Sociologically A Reflection

Q You made it! You studied deviance in a sociological manner for 16 weeks. I hope you feel very proud of your efforts and that you have learned enough about deviance to expand your opinions and perspectives. The key to rounding out a good learning experience is to practice meta-cognition and reflect upon your learning. For this final assignment, Re-read your Starting to Study Deviance Sociologically: A Letter to Your Instructor that you wrote in Week 2. Write me a new letter in which you answer these questions: What changed since you wrote your original letter? What stayed the same? Did you reach your personal learning outcomes or goals? Why or why not? What was the most profound or impactful thing that you learned this semester? Why? What assignments or types of assignments were the most helpful in your learning? Which ones were the least helpful? If you had to sum up what you've learned from this course in one word, what would it be and why? Your final letter should be 750-1000 words and address all of the questions above.

While writing the original letter, I had a basic knowledge of deviance. As I mentioned in the previous note, social deviance is a sociological concept that labels a person as deviant if the person behaves in a way that society does not conform to. So, an act can be considered deviant for a community and not abnormal for another culture. I just had the idea about the concept of conflict theory prevalent in our society, where even today, black children are viewed as criminals, and white children are considered adorable (Wade, 2013).
