Spiegalman wants to understand his father because he was hurt by his father and he wants to understand his side of the story in order to feel better about his father. He understands his father's side of the story and where he came from. He always argued with his father, and his father told him that he couldn't do anything as well as he could. And now that he became successful, he feels bad about proving his father wrong. But he doesn't compare his success to surviving Auschwitz like his father did.
