Q Self-Paced Assignments Self-Paced Assignments can be submitted anytime throughout the semester, but definitely by the end of the summer session (7/2). 1. Choose 2 out of the 6 articles posted in the Self-Paced Assignments folder to read 2. Write a Reaction Essay (minimum 400 words) on each reading you have read. Post this is the assigned Discussion Board (labeled SPA1, SPA2). 3. Comment on a classmate’s Reaction Essay (in at least 130 words). The Reaction Essay includes the following: 1. A brief summary of the article you read 2. Discuss some OR all of the following points: • How is the work related to problems in our present-day world? • How is the material related to your life, experiences, feelings, and ideas? For instance, what emotions did the work arouse in you? • Did the work increase your understanding of a particular issue? Did it change your perspective in any way? • Evaluate the merit of the work: the importance of its points, its accuracy, completeness, organization, and so on. • You can also indicate here whether or not you would recommend the work to others, and why. Please back up your observations with quotes from the reading. Each Self-Paced Assignment is worth 5 points and will be graded in the following way: Submitted a Reaction Essay and commented on a class member’s post; both the response and comment are detailed and reflect a close reading of the course material; student included quotes from the reading; met and/or exceeded minimum word requirement 5 Submitted a Reaction Essay and commented on a class member’s post; both the response and comment are somewhat detailed and do not reflect a close reading of the assigned course material; met minimum word requirement 4 Only submitted Reaction Essay or only responded to a class member’s post; the submitted work is not detailed (it is very brief) and does not reflect a close reading of the assigned material. 2-3 Submitted a Reaction Essay that doesn’t meet the minimum word requirement. 1
