Q Would you want the right to choose the sex, health, and abilities of your offspring (imagine you are about to have children)? Comment on the idea of Genetic Counseling. If you don't know what it is, go ahead and look it up.
Whenever the subject of genetic counseling and engineering comes up, I think of two of my favorite sci-fi films that, at the time of their release, seemed very futuristic; Gattaca and Code 46. As we marvel at the possibilities of spawning flawless and physically superior children, it’s easy to get uneasy about where it’s all headed and how we regulate such power and expectations. After all, how many times have our expectations in life destroyed our abilities to actually live life and enjoy the moment for what it is? I know it sounds so existential, but if we really expect a perfectly crafted cocktail every time we make a baby then we are headed for some serious disappointment, and who in the end would it be taken out on?
