Response 4 - Preschool Emotional Development

Q Having read/ viewed the 3 websites for more information on typical social-emotional development, please respond to one of these prompts. Respond to a classmate. Use information from the website, videos and other readings to help explain the child's behavior with a developmental lens. Your explanation can explain both the behavior in the scenario and more detail about the age group in general. Use the websites, other course resources on canvas or an additional source (the PBS parents has a lot of ideas) to develop strategies: The family of a 3 year old in your program comes to school with their daughter in her pajamas. She refused to put on her clothes and they were out of time and patience. With what you know about 3 year old development, how might you help them understand their daughter? What ideas do you have to help them with family routines? When you take your 4 year old to the park, he is eager to play with the other children. He is an active, physical child and tends to greet children in a physical way. He sometimes grab toys other children are using. When they don't want to play with him, he is upset and calls them a name. Knowing 4 year old development, how can you understand what is happening from his perspective? What might help him in his interactions at the park? Your 5 year old is home from Kindergarten due to the COVID 19 school closures. She wants to play with her friends. She is more clingy than usual and keeps asking when she can go to school. The family routine is different and that has affected meal times, bed times and other parts of her day. (There is a google folder on Canvas with additional COVID resources and LOTS of information on line). Another useful resource is the Teaching Pyramid Website - Family Resources - lots of short handouts in Spanish and English on teaching/ suporting social/ emotional skills, ideas for routines, etc. https://cainclusion.org/teachingpyramid/materials/family/

I learned about the socio-emotional development of a three-year-old child from PBS materials. This is the age when children learn by exploration, utilizing all of their senses to comprehend their surroundings. At this age, children began to experience emotions like fear, compassion, guilt, and jealousy, as well as frustration when things did not go the way they want. This is clear in this case, in which a three-year-old girl refused to put on her clothing and instead to stay in her pajamas. Thus, I would help their parents/caregivers to understand that it is an age-appropriate behavior of their child. It is normal for the kids because they feel comfortable wearing it as most of the time at home they only wear that.
