Q . Based on the four videos and any prior knowledge of the form, what do you think is a unique power of the oral tradition, of story performance? 2. The Storyteller in Saundra Gilliard's TED talk story is, in the end, praised for "inspir[ing] your spirit," just as the farmer provides food and the blacksmith money. Njabulo Ndebele is also a storyteller (the author of "The Prophetess"). What do you see as the particular power of this story? In what way could this story inspire people to behave or live or be? 3. Chinua Achebe, author of Things Fall Apart--which we'll be reading later in the semester--once said, "It is the storyteller who makes us what we are, who creates history. The storyteller creates the memory that the survivors must have--otherwise their surviving would have no meaning." How do you think a storyteller can "create history"? Share an example of this happening--from anywhere--from your experience or from others' experiences about which you're aware.
