The predecessor to the African National Congress was the South African Native National Congress, formed in 1912 in response to the acute milieu of social inequality and prejudice which colored the African society in the face of general African disenfranchisement and the passage of number of statutes, meant to be at their utmost disadvantage. In 1923, the SANCC changed its name to ANC and gradually matters came to a head with the election of the National Party in 1948. The laws of apartheid were created and public segregation ensured that whites and blacks were relegated to separate spheres.
