Neandertals lived in Asia and Europe for over 200,000 years ago while in some areas they live less than 30,000 years ago. The fossil record in Europe from 40,000 to 30,000 years before the present suggests the origin of the modern human Homo sapiens in Europe. In Europe, modern humans were present at 35,000 yBP in Romania and the Czech Republic. From the fossil record, it is evident that the earliest modern humans shared some features with the Neandertals such as the occipital bun. It indicates the evidence of the early modern humans and Neandertals interbreeding. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is inherited from the mother to the offspring and the mtDNA analysis of modern humans with the skeleton of dozens of Neandertals shows similar features with the early modern humans while it shows dissimilarities with the modern humans.
