China and Japan, both chose two different ways to progress. The Japanese chose the Meiji Restoration to develop its society but the Chinese held on to its old cultures and traditions like the bound feet. Initially, the Chinese got into a fight with the British regarding the opium trade but the Japanese imitated the Western societies and did not consider themselves “Asian”. The Japanese made changes in their laws, for example, the Samurai warriors were under certain restrictions and the Japanese education was also getting influenced by the West. The Chinese were under constant attacks from the British and from other European countries, like France.
