There are four spinal reflexes; the stretch reflex, the golgi tendon reflex, the withdrawal reflex and the crossed extensor reflex. The first two of these are initiated by proprioceptors, while the second two are initiated by pain receptors. Each reflex serves a different function, but overall, spinal reflexes function to help us maintain balance and avoid injury. Begin your post by reviewing the five components of any reflex arc. What are the specific elements in a withdrawal reflex, which is a polysynaptic reflex arc? Then address the following topics: • What is the function of the withdrawal reflex?
