Module 7 Critical Thinking

Q Module 7Critical Thinking Assignment Withdrawal Reflex For this assignment, you will apply what you have learned about spinal reflexes in Chapter 14 of the textbook. There are four spinal reflexes; the stretch reflex, the golgi tendon reflex, the withdrawal reflex and the crossed extensor reflex. The first two of these are initiated by proprioceptors, while the second two are initiated by pain receptors. Each reflex serves a different function, but overall, spinal reflexes function to help us maintain balance and avoid injury. Begin your post by reviewing the five components of any reflex arc. What are the specific elements in a withdrawal reflex, which is a polysynaptic reflex arc? Then address the following topics: • What is the function of the withdrawal reflex? How does it maintain homeostasis? • What can be learned by eliciting the withdrawal reflex in the clinical setting? How is this done? • Discuss an example of an injury or disease that would cause the withdrawal reflex to be reduced or absent. Requirements: • Your paper should be 2-3 pages in length, excluding title and reference pages. • Include at least two scholarly references, in addition to the course textbook. Also cite your sources in the body of the paper. • Conform to the APA guidelines in the CSU Global Writing Center. • The CSU Global Library is a good place to find these references. Reflex arcs have five critical components. You have the receptor that reacts to stimulus that can be located at the termination of a sensory neuron. Next is the neuron that conducts nerve impulses going toward the central nervous system (CNS), this is known as the sensory neuron. The integration center (neuronal junction) is another one of the five components and can be found in the gaps in the CNS. The fourth component consist of a motor neuron that carries nerve impulses away from the integration center (neuronal junction) to an effector. The fifth and last component is the effector response. These effector responds to the efferent impulses either by contracting muscle fibers if present, or secretion of a gland (O’Loughlin, V. 2022).
