Between the period of 3500 and 2000 BCE, a group of societies emerged along the banks of the river basins on the Afro-Eurasian landmass. These included, Mesopotamia (between Euphrates and Tigris Rivers), Indus Valley (along the Indus River in Northwest India), Egypt (along Nile) and in China (near the Yellow and Yangzi Rivers). They soon developed into complex settlements with a dense population. It is important to remember that these river basins were areas which were drained by rivers and all its tributaries rendering the region quite fertile as well as providing water for irrigation which could support flora and fauna.
