M6 Discussion: What Your Friends & Family Know About Sex & Gender

M6 Discussion: What Your Friends & Family Know About Sex & Gender

Q In this week's discussion, we will be doing something a little different! Assignment: Rather than telling one another about your own understandings of sex and gender, you will briefly survey one friend and one family member about their understandings of sex and gender. You will craft a brief response to each answer set, and post your participants' answers and your remarks in your Discussion post. Once you have completed that, you may respond to two of your peers' posts. Instructions for your post: 1) Locate one friend who is NOT taking this class. Ask them if they are able and willing to offer five minutes of their time to answer three quick questions for a class assignment. 2) Explain the following to them: • that you are conducting a survey about identity for your American Culture and Society class, • that their answers will be shared in a discussion board, but that they will remain anonymous, • that they can choose not to answer the question for whatever reason and suffer no consequences whatsoever. 3) Ask them if they understand and if they give you permission to proceed. 4) If yes, then proceed to ask them the 3 questions, below. Record their answers as accurately as possible. Do not attempt to "correct" their answers or to guide their responses in any way. 5) Develop a brief (1 or 2 sentences), informed response to the information you have learned, and prepare to share your participant's answers and your informed response in your post. (an informed response is one not based on opinion, but based on what you learned in Module 6) Respect your participants' privacy: do NOT use their names or mention any identifying information. Repeat the instructions with one family member of your choice. Your original M6 Discussion post will contain both your FRIEND'S and your FAMILY MEMBER'S survey answers and your brief, informed responses to both of their answers. THE QUESTIONS: 1) As it pertains to human beings, how would you define "sex"? (you may clarify that you are asking about the adjective, not the verb) 2) How would you define gender? 3) What is the relationship between sex and gender? Instructions for your peer response: Just as you do each week, respond to two of the peers in your group. Note similarities and/or differences between your participants' responses, and offer remarks on your peers' commentaries. Guidelines for Discussion Boards You will submit an original, substantial response to each Module's Discussion Board prompt by Thursday of each week. You will then post a genuine, substantial response to two (2) of the peers in your group. Grading Rubric Discussion Boards are worth 20points each, and will be graded using the letter grade scale. For each discussion, you will be expected to post both of the answer sets and your informed responses (two or three sentences) to those answer sets. You will also respond to (at least) two (2) of your classmates’ posts with a substantial response (two or three sentences per answer set). If you ONLY submit your post, then your maximum discussion grade will be 60% (D). If you respond to one other person's post, then your maximum discussion grade will be 70% (C). If you follow instructions and respond to two of your classmates' posts, your discussion grade will be raised from anywhere between 80% (B) to 100% (A). By substantial we mean that you say more than just “that's what I got” or “great point”. You must explain yourself by referring back to the corresponding topic. NOTE ABOUT DISCUSSIONS: Discussions are NOT political/religious platforms. They are designed to demonstrate that you understand and can clearly and effectively articulate anthropological concepts and facts as they pertain to American Culture and Society. You may certainly incorporate outside reading material or anecdotal information provided it is relevant to the Topic. Only relay personal beliefs or opinions if prompted by assignment instructions.

I have surveyed my sister and here is her response: "Sex is the biological role assigned to a person on birth. A persona’s reproductive organs are assigned by their sexes. On the other hand, gender is a socially perceived concept that assigns specific roles to each of the sexes. Gender roles are given by the society that assigns male and females their characteristics, behavioral traits, specific clothes and even certain values. Sexes are purely biological that are associated with reproduction as each of the sexes have different reproductive organs to play a specific role in the overall process of reproduction.
