Q This assignment addresses the following outcomes: • Explain the impact of the European “discovery” of the Americas in a global setting, including the biological, social, and cultural effects of the Columbian Exchange. (CO#1, CO#3, CO#7/History Program Outcome 1) As result of Columbus’s voyages and the subsequent exploration of the Western Hemisphere by Europeans, biological and cultural exchanges occurred between Native Americans and European explorers. Some of the results of this exchange were beneficial, but others were disastrous. In this short paper, you will explore some of the results of the exchanges and draw conclusions about the long-term impact. Your paper will be styled as a pamphlet, such as those distributed to visitors at a museum or historic site, providing an informed overview of the topic. The text for your pamphlet should be about 500 words long. For your first written assignment, create the text for a pamphlet on the Columbian Exchange. Your pamphlet will be written for a contemporary audience and will include the following: • The negative and positive results of the Columbian Exchange on the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere, as well as Europe • A conclusion explaining the long term impact of the Columbian Exchange on world history. You must include at least one outside primary or secondary source beyond the course readings for this week. It can be either a scholarly secondary source from the Excelsior College Library (Links to an external site.) or a primary source from the Excelsior College Library (Links to an external site.) or from this list of pre-approved primary source websites in US History (Links to an external site.). You should NOT use non-scholarly websites such as Wikipedia. If you have questions about finding appropriate sources, please contact your instructor.
