Laboratory Assignment 3

Q Getting Ready for A&P: Your Learning Toolbox • Points 10 • Submitting a text entry box or a file upload Assignment Instructions "Why are the study guides for this course filled with questions and not just summaries of the material? I'd rather just read a summary. Why are there so many quizzes and exams in this course?" The short answer is: practicing retrieval is crucial to academic success. Retrieval practice has been voted one of the most powerful study techniques by former A&P students. In this assignment you will first learn about retrieval practice and then learn about other helpful tools for being successful this semester. Step 1: What is Retrieval Practice? Use the Retrieval Practice (Links to an external site.) website to learn about retrieval practice. You don't have to download any of the free guides, but you may want to. You can follow any links from this site you wish, but don't forget to watch the video at the bottom of the webpage! Answer these questions in your notes to complete this first step: 1. Have you ever learned via retrieval practice? 2. If you have used retrieval practice, when and why did you use the technique? 3. If you have not used retrieval practice, explain how you might learn someone's phone number this way (does anyone remember anyone's phone number any more?!) Step 2: Evaluating Your Learning Toolbox 1. Read the chapter overviews of various learning techniques from the book, "Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning" by Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger, III, and Mark A. McDaniel, on the webpage: Making it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning. (Links to an external site.) 2. After reading the chapter overviews, choose your favorite 2 learning techniques from those listed and write a short description in your notes of how you will use each one this semester to be successful in A&P. Retrieval Practice I have learned through retrieval practice before. It was during a biology class in high school. Our biology teacher had this custom of asking us to reflect on what we had learned in previous lessons. He constantly gives us questions on the learned topic. This enables the teacher to assess our comprehension of the topic we discussed. This random question challenges us and helps us develop skills of retrieving things we learned. Spacing and Interleaving It employs simply dividing learning opportunities across multiple days instead of one session. This includes studying the same amount of content across days before exams compare to learning just once. I employed this technique and designed a timetable that will allow more time to study.
