Homelessness as a result from aging out of the system is not an individual issue, but a society’s issue. 26,000 youth are aged out, which leaves $300,000 per person from tax dollars, resulting in 7.8 billion dollars. While some people may see that money as a key factor, the real emotional trauma is the price that these aged out youths are facing. According to the Coalition for the homeless, in January 2020, there were 62,679 homeless people, including 14,682 homeless families with 22,013 homeless children. While these numbers are alarming there is also a population who seems to be forgotten about, aged out foster care youths. Each year, an estimated 700,000 unaccompanied minors, meaning they are not part of a family or accompanied by a parent or guardian, age out of the Foster Care System.
