Ice Breaker 6

Q Oral history is such an important part of our nation's history. Hearing directly from a person who lived through an historical event is a priceless piece of history. Unfortunately, we are unable to travel back in time and interview so many people that would help fully complete our understanding of a subject or time period. This week we will look at a variety of topics including the changing roles of women and the issues related to slavery as well as the lives of the slaves themselves. Let's pretend we had the ability to travel back in time (wouldn't that be amazing to our understanding of history!) If you were able to travel back in time, which person from the sources we studied (Gorn 9, Gorn 10, Hollitz 10*, Gorn 11) would you want to interview and why? What would you ask them? *we will look at this in the next module but you can select someone from this chapter

Q For this week's ice breaker, please answer the following questions: 1. Who would you interview from the sources (please list the name of the person and the source they are from in the textbook) and why? 2. What question/questions would you ask them and why?

• My interviewee would be Fredrick Douglas from Gorn 11, source 1. Questions: 1. Why did he wait till age 21 to flee, and why go to the north from Maryland? I ask this question because he has been enslaved for so long. What was it that made him decide that this was the right time? 2. What rights are you looking for? I would like to know what right he is looking for and how he knows about these rights. 3. Why do you think you must dedicate your life and safety to this cause? I would like to know at any point whether he thought what he was doing was right or wrong.
