Q Project Plan PJM 454 - Nowotarski You will apply the concepts covered in class to propose and plan a sample project. You will deliver your plan piecemeal during the course, with the final, integrated project plan due by the end of the course. There will be regular checkpoints during the course, at which time you will make available drafts of portions of your plan and receive feedback. In-class students will do the checkpoints in class; online students will do the checkpoints through the Assignments tool in D2L. Select a project idea that interests you. The project you plan should require multiple project team members and at least 400 person-hours of estimated effort to execute. Possible ideas include, but are not limited to: • Building or remodeling a residence or commercial structure • Selecting and/or implementing information technology • Starting a new business • Responding to a new regulatory requirement Here is a recap of the items that constitute the project plan: Draft Topic Where to Find Item Version Notes Covered Additional Due in Information Project Jan. 30 Provides a preliminary Modules Schwalbe, ch. 3 Charter overview of the scope, 1-2 schedule, and cost of the Schwalbe (40 pts) project template: charter.doc WBS Jan. 30 Provide at least 3 levels of Module 2 Schwalbe, ch. 4 detail (top level is name of (50 pts) project) Schwalbe Should represent 100% of template: the breadth of project scope wbs.doc Should be created in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc. Can be a text outline or a hierarchical diagram Schedule, Feb. 6 Should show the major Modules 3, Schwalbe, ch. 5, Critical Path (Network) activities of the project, 4 Appendix A precedence relationships, (50 pts) Feb. 20 start and end dates, and Schwalbe critical path template: p. 1 of 4 Draft Topic Where to Find Item Version Notes Covered Additional Due in Information (Schedule, Can start with a network project Critical diagram. Final schedule schedule.mpp Path) should be represented on a Gantt chart that also shows pdf version of critical path the above I strongly recommend you create this in Gantt Project or an equivalent project management tool. You can generate what is required by entering the following information in Gantt Project o Project Start Date o Tasks o For each task: ? Duration ? Predecessors Alternatively, you can create the Gantt chart in Excel, PowerPoint, or another drawing tool Cost Budget Feb. 20 Costs should be in $ and Module 4 Schwalbe, ch. 5 Estimate include items such as: and Time- o Labor Schwalbe Phased o Materials templates: Baseline o Subcontractors and cost consultants (if used) estimate.xls (50 pts) o Equipment and facilities cost baseline.xls rental o Travel o Contingencies You must support your estimates by showing assumptions I suggest you create this in Excel. This should be consistent with the Gantt chart Project Feb. 27 Include a project Module 5 Schwalbe, ch. 6 Organization (final; no organization chart, a short Structure draft description of the key roles Schwalbe required) and reporting relationships, templates: (30 pts) and a RACI chart project organizational p. 2 of 4 Draft Topic Where to Find Item Version Notes Covered Additional Due in Information chart.ppt RACI chart.xls Risk Feb. 27 For this plan, focus on Modules 5 Schwalbe, ch. 6, Analysis (final; no negative risk, i.e., a 8 draft possible future event that (40 pts) required) will lead to an undesirable Schwalbe project outcome template: Identify at least 3 negative risk register.xls risks. For each risk: o Describe the risk in a sentence or bullet point (e.g., “Key person leaves the team, jeopardizing the project schedule”) o Assess the probability of the risk occurring, using whatever scale you think is appropriate (e.g., High-Medium- Low, percentage from 1-100%, etc.) o Assess the impact to the project if the risk materializes. Use whatever scale you think is appropriate (e.g., High-Medium- Low, cost impact in $$$, etc.) o Develop a response plan: ? The four basic response strategies are acceptance, avoidance, mitigation, and transference ? Fully explain the response to each risk p. 3 of 4 Draft Topic Where to Find Item Version Notes Covered Additional Due in Information Overall Final Plan The points will be earned -- -- due Feb. based on the project plan’s (40 pts) 27 coherence and internal consistency If the plan was created in groups, this section’s points will be shared by the team and will also be based on identification of a primary “owner” (or “joint ownership”) for each section of the plan TOTAL: 300 pts
