The two types of gymnastic systems were German Gymnastics and the Swedish Gymnastics. The German Gymnastics used heavy apparatus, including jumping horses and horizontal bars. It was popular in Massachusetts between 1830 and 1860. In 1850, a turnerbund was created in New York. The Turners of the New York City turnerbund began a seminary in 1866 for training teachers of German gymnastics. Apart from New York, Chicago and Ohio were popular in this system. The North American Gymnastic Union was the formal name for the Turner society.
