The most important characteristic of the Colonial Period (pre-1776) that shaped modern America was the Enlightenment ideas that became the basis of the American Revolution. Without the American Revolution, America could never become modern as they would have still been under the British parliament and would run according to them and unless a nation is free from the bondages of others it cannot develop. Therefore, enlightenment played a major role to encourage people to revolt against the British government.
