Q How much variety—social and economic—existed in the Old South? In what ways—social and economic—was the South dependent on slavery and cotton, and what were the consequences of this dependency?
Plantation agriculture had been the major occupation in which the observation of slaves could be evident in the South. Therefore, there had been great importance of the aspect of slavery when it had come to concerning the economy of the South. However, there had also been other occupations where slaves could be observed. Stable hands had been one occupation. Another occupation had been carriage drivers. There had also been positions of seamstresses which had been taken up as occupation by the slaves. Maids as well as butlers had also been positions in which the slaves had taken part to make their occupations.
