The Royal Academies of Art established in England and France were the most important professional art societies in Europe in the 19th centuries. They supported art to a great extent. They gave instructions and organized annual and semi-annual exhibitions and also provided places to the artists to display their artwork and also encouraged critical appraisal of their artworks. The young artists received much encouragement from here and they rose to prominence because of their connection with their patrons. However, by the late 18th century, a monopoly was established both in France and England and the subjects were decided by them.
