Discussion 6_Art History I

Q Comparing and contrasting works of art is part of art history. It helps to focus on a piece and gain a greater understanding of it. Look at the Apulu (Apollo of Veii) sculpture (in the Powerpoint and in the text) and compare it to a sculpture of your choosing from Ancient Greece. Stylistically, what is similar about the two sculptures? What is different? Are they made of the same medium? Are they compositionally similar? What are the major differences in composition? Were they used in similar contexts? (for example in temples, as decorative pieces, etc.)

The Apulu or Apollo of Veii is a sculpture dated c. 510-100 BCE. This sculpture clearly shows the characteristic of Etruscan sculpture as it is shown moving forward in a movement. The statue is supported by the scroll underneath it and this scroll has no symbolic meaning attached to it. This sculpture bears a lot of similarity with the Greek art. The Apollo is seen with an Archaic smile which is one of the features of Greek sculptures. This statue shows that Etruscans have copied the techniques of sculpture from the Greeks. This comparison can be further cleared if compared by one of the ancient Greek sculpture named marble metope from the Parthenon which dates from c. 447-438 BC.
